Dark Age Europe 500-900AD
Lionel Cole's Roman History class has now finished for this season and will resume again in October 2019 under the title Dark Age Europe 500-900AD. There will be an exploration of the main themes in European history for that period. For instance did the rise of Islam shut down Mediterranean trade and lead to the decline of towns in western Europe ? Did the Vikings do more than create havoc?
Meetings: Alternate Tuesdays 2.30 pm from October to about May

Military, Aviation and Maritime Histories
So far this is a small group moving slowly but enthusiastically forward, but with an embryonic battle-plan. Reinforcements would assist a campaign we envisage as being as broad as possible.
At present our members research a subject of interest to them and make a short presentation to the others. Discussion follows the presentation from which all benefit. Recently we have had presentations on the English Civil War, the Jameson Raid, “Who killed Nelson”?, ambulance trains during WW1 and the destruction of the French Navy during WW2.
However, we hope that the group will encompass all aspects of war including the Home Front with subjects such as emergency services during the Blitz, women in munitions factories, espionage and resistance.
It is a group without gender boundaries. If the subject interests you, come and join us.
Meetings: Monthly 2nd Thursday 10am.
Contact: Michael Polkinghorne.
